Introducing a Holistic Approach to Language Learning

Two Students Reading Books

Dedicated to Holistic Language Acquisition

Welcome to Holistic Language Acquisition, an organization committed to the promotion of holistic learning techniques to complement traditional educational methods. Based on our research, we believe that enhanced textbook design which includes the use modular software supplements that are adaptable to a learner’s individual preferences and abilities may improve the language study experience and increase the motivation to study foreign languages.

Polygots

Polyglots

Polyglots, our newest book, is based on a series of in-depth interviews with 22 speakers of five or more languages. The author is a polyglot herself with professional experience in simultaneous interpreting. Most of the book is intended for general readers interested in learning foreign languages, with the final chapters geared towards professionals, including language educators at all levels, linguists, textbook publishers and educational software designers. During the interviews, polyglots discuss their experiences in language learning, traveling, and adapting to new cultures. Additionally, the interview excerpts are interspersed with short chapters of advice from both polyglots themselves and a variety of experts: psychologists, linguists and language educators.

The Final Link in Speech Therapy

Some aspects of what we have learned in our research on polyglots are also applicable to helping speech therapy patients accomplish the final transition from monotone speech, characterized by pauses between words, to natural speech. This innovative therapy method is designed for patients who are recovering from traumatic brain injury or stroke. The book describes a case study of a patient who was able to regain his full, nuanced vocal expression after speaking in monotone for two years, as well as to resume his natural speech patterns.

New opportunities

While computer-assisted learning is highly effective, especially in the initial stages of foreign language acquisition, the role of the teacher should remain central in language instruction for the students to achieve long-term success. The value of conversation in the learning process is a motivating factor, crucial to extending the overall time a student is willing to devote to study of another language. The increased feasibility of one-to-one language instruction online, creates an excellent opportunity to adapt the existing educational programs designed for the classroom. Expanding the product line of educational materials to accommodate individual teaching provides new opportunities for both publishers and software developers.
